A vocal chain that pays: SM7B, gain, and when to buy a condenser
Stop buying the third microphone. Finish the first chain.
Dynamics first in live rooms
If the room is untreated, a condenser will record the room. An SM7B or SM57 will record the mouth. That is why broadcast dynamics still win podcasts and many pop vocals.
Gain is part of the microphone
An SM7B into a Scarlett 2i2 without help is a noisy argument. A Cloudlifter CL-1, a dbx 286s, or a serious ISA / Apollo pre is not optional flavor — it is the second half of the product.
Buy the condenser when the room is ready
AT2020 / NT1 when you have treatment and a quiet pre. TLM 103 when the vocal is the record. A $1,300 microphone in a bedroom with hardwood and a window AC is still a bedroom.
